Summary/Abstract: The article outlines the role that European Union Battlegroups (EU BG) play in The Common Security and Defence Policy. Twelve years after gaining by them the full operational capacity is convenient time for analysing whether the concept of battlegroups is adequate to contemporary threats and if it meets expectations of the countries that contribute to them. The article analyses in particular the origins of the EU BG concept (in regards to efforts to create European military forces dating back to 1950s), their tasks together with predictable actions scenarios, their structure and the process of forming and training. Furthermore, the positions of several European states have been compared, as well as their hitherto contribution to building the capacity of forces.
