Summary/Abstract: The spark that set off the Great Eastern Crisis (1877–78), the Peasant Uprising of July 1875, is commonly reduced to a short passage, or a mere footnote in general academic studies.2 Yet the uprising is significant in its own right3 and goes a long way towards explaining why the Ottoman Sultanate failed to cling on to her Balkan provinces in the late nineteenth century.
