Summary/Abstract: The declassification of pictures taken by American military satellites during the Cold War has made their scientific usage possible in a number of fields. They help archaeologists to discover in various parts of the world both ruins and entire new localities that are today imperceptible or completely lost as a result of the rapid development of agriculture and urban areas as well as the construction of water works. Information on changes to the environment is also a valuable resource for the natural sciences. The first generation of images was made accessible in 1995, followed by second and third series in 2002 and 2011. Together they make up a unique collection of hundreds of thousands of shots from the 1960–1984 period. Unlike contemporary satellite photographs, which deliver an image of the current situation in high resolution, it is possible to use them to look all the way back to several decades ago.
