Summary/Abstract: The Church has a long, dating back to its origins tradition of educating adults. Adult baptism and Christian initiation in the early centuries could serve as examples. According to the Church only an adult is able to undertake the tasks as required by the baptism because an adult is a subject of existence and activity of the Church. Nowadays adult Christian education sets out definite assumptions. To educate an adult not so much to love the Church, as it is in the present historical and social circumstances, but to educate according to the Gospel message what an adult should be. Only with such an interpretation of the Church can he find room for engagement. The Church needs to have critical regard to the problems emergent in the Christian community. Adult education ought to be tailor made for an adult so that real problems that he is experiencing, including these connected to his faith are dealt with, as well as his aspirations and plans he wants to fulfill. Another assumption is to use the type of language that an adult is using to convince him that he is treated responsibly. Thus, one of the obstacles in engaging an adult in Christian education has been, and still is, an inappropriate type of language spoken to him. As he then does not see need to engage in such education.
