Summary/Abstract: City planning is an inseparable part of cities and is one of the complementary key concepts along with urbanization. Following the adoption of settled life after being hunter-gatherers, humankind established cities due to increasing population and the skill to obtain more than needed. As well as providing people a system to live within, urbanization is the guaranty of permanency. The most significant traces of urbanization and city planning can be observed in Roman cities. These cities played a pioneering role for future cities because the grid plan with crosscut streets and avenues used in Roman cities is definitely the most obvious indicator of permanency. Today, the city centers that are designed in a system and functionally integrate both commercial buildings and public buildings are undoubtedly the reflections of Roman city planning.
