Summary/Abstract: Ulvi Cemal Erkin is one of the representatives of the “Contemporary Turkish Polyphonic Music” and regarded as a member of the group known as “Turkish Fives.” The most distinctive characteristic in his works is he used synthesizing maqams of Turkish Art Music, rhytmic and melodic structures of Turkish Folk Music with the compositional principles Western Classical Music. The aim of this study is to present a general information on Erkin’s life and works, to study his piece titled as “Improvisation,” to guide and give technical and musical ideas to the performer about the improvisational characteristics of the work based of the composer’ expression of “come una improvisazione” (in improvisational style), and to provide convenience during the performance.
