Summary/Abstract: Our study aims at analyzing from a historical, liturgical and theological point of view the custom of celebrating the Sacrament of Holy Unction during Holy Week. The first part of our study deals with the precedents for Holy Unction during Holy Week, outlining the possible connection set between the Mystery of Healing and the ritual of anointing for the reconciliation of the penitents during Holy Week, highly recurrent in the Christian West. The second part of our research evaluates the historical changes undergone by the current ceremony of Holy Unction performed on Holy Wednesday, following the Greek tradition.
