THE ISSUE OF CULTURAL IDENTITY OF BOSNIAKS FROM SANDŽAK (1913-2013)

Summary/Abstract: The issue of cultural identity of Bosniaks from Sandžak has primary importance for definition of cultural policy and overall social development in Sandžak, culturally and religiously ambivalent by artificial border between two countries that exist today. National Council of Bosniaks in the southern part (Montenegro) and northern part (Serbia) of Sandžak keep trying to integrate overall Bosniaks cultural treasure chest, through institutional channels, into the “multicultural” body of the Serbian and Montenegrin society. Cultural policy activities of these countries are reduced to a lump-determination according to the Bosniaks national community, and a series of abstract paradigms separated from contemporary European cultural processes. More intense aspiration of these two countries to be integrated into the European cultural space, is followed by the persistence of local Bosniaks to preserve their identity and traditional cultural values.
