Summary/Abstract: This paper traces the four-century-long existence of the National and University Library in Zagreb – from its origin in the 17 th century to the present day. It discusses the chronological stages in the Library’s development and presents the various historical tendencies and ideas which have contributed to building a modern national and university library institution. The article provides a brief overview of the collections held by the National and University Library in Zagreb.
