Summary/Abstract: Václav Talich and Wilhelm Furtwängler were extraordinary personalities that in the period of the Nazism totalitarianism started on their way for truth and artistic honesty. While many others, collaborating either of fear or egoism, passed the “denazification” or lustration processes relatively well, it was the above mentioned personalities and their courage and incorruptibility that were subjected to intrigue and controversies. Following the social and juristic rehabilitation, Talich and Furtwängler were allowed to return to artistic activity, nevertheless the hateful campaigne, which was launched against the first by the propaganda of the new totalitarianism and against the latter by journalism (especially in the United States), was carried on till the end of their lives. Though they conducted at foremost concert halls and stages and their recordings at present rank to the most much-sought-for ones, neither of them managed to get rid of philosophical dilemma implicating the inevitable connection between art and politics: the way of transformation of artistic values dependent upon different reception circumstances, which are formed by the mass stream of activity – ranging from unquestioning loyalty to profession – towards the modelling “force” called political power.
