Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the approach of the Czech literary critics in exile to literary works written and published in the communist Czechoslovakia. Author directs his attention primarily to the period of the 1950’s when the reflection in exile was focused namely on the works and life peripetia of the writers belonging to the generation of avantgarde (V Nezval, K Biebl, K Teige); later also on the works of the coming generation. Using the example of Josef Skvorecky’s novel The Cowards, author shows both the potential and the limits of the criteria the exile literary critics applied to literary works written in the homeland. However, it was this novel what made exile literary critics alter the way of reception and reflection of the literary works coming from the communist Czechoslovakia – in the 1960’s, they were ready to accept this literature with much more respect.
