UMORUL CA OBSTACOL DE COMUNICARE INTERCULUTRALĂ
HUMOR AS AN OBSTACLE TO INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION

Summary/Abstract: In our world filled with everyday tension, humor is the only means for relaxation. It gives a spirit of freedom to the world and puts on the man’s shoulders, without squashing him, the burden of his own destiny. Humor represents social and cultural wisdom, displaying itself as a form of an ethnical expression and belonging. Moreover, humoristic expression of a certain social and cultural system (ethnic group) is accomplished by gestures, by twisting up the meaning of the words in certain context or in different situations. So, humor functions through communication, it establishes contact and feedback. However, when translated into other languages the very characteristics that represent the essence of a certain language can be incomprehensible or even insulting to others. In such occasions ethnic, social and cultural stereotypes gain their perspective. Therefore, the translation of certain aspects of humor makes the translation problematic and hardens intercultural communication. In some cases it can even lead to misunderstanding or conflict.
