Summary/Abstract: Press agencies are the most important and trusted disseminators of information in the world. All mass media are relying on their news, which they spread to the public. That is why almost every country today has its national press agency, including Slovakia. The Press Agency of the Slovak Republic (TASR) was established in 1992, on the eve of splitting Czechoslovakia into two independent republics. But its history is much longer. It was influenced not only by the so-called years ended with „8“ – the year 1918 when the Czechoslovak Press Office was established, 1968, when a new abbreviation for ČTK in Slovakia – ČSTK was put into practice, which highlighted the presence of Slovakia in the national agency. Last but not least, 2008, the year of signing a new law that transformed the TASR into a public institution.
