Summary/Abstract: The Slovak Republic is a heterogeneous state, both ethnically and religiously. This fact manifests itself in the structure of Slovak population. According to the latest statistic data, 80.7% of people living in Slovakia identify themselves with the Slovak nationality, i.e. the majority; however, Hungarian, Roma, Czech, Ruthenian, Ukrainian, Russian, German, Polish and other minorities live here as well. The development of multicultural and multiethnical society depends on active political support aimed at minorities and ethnic groups; this support must spread across many different institutional, socio-economic and cultural levels in order to be effective. Given the Slovak majority´s general opinions and points of view, the Roma are probably seen as the most problematic minority. The Romani people are perceived via constantly (re)created stereotypes and prejudices, and in the eyes of the majority, these are significantly supported by media. The ways mainstream media report on the Roma issue" (and on the Romani people´s behaviour) constitute a negative image of the Roma minority, which is only underlined by various negative adjectives such as "unadaptable", "illiterate", "socially parasiting", etc. The authors´ study focuses on the Roma minority and its status in the structure of Slovak minorities, placing emphasis on the ways Romani people are portrayed in media and specific journalistic information on them published in various Slovak periodicals.
