Summary/Abstract: Degenerative aortic stenosis is a disease of social significance in the developed countries, associated with the aging population and higher rate of comorbidity. Cardiac surgery was the only alternative for management of aortic stenosis until 2007, when the valves for transcatheter implantation were approved. The minimally invasive nature of this procedure, the short immobilization period and the possibility for quick resocialization of the patients after it, turned TAVI into an effective and preferred treatment in patients with high risk for conventional surgery.
