Teaching Italian as a Business and Negotiation Language: an Issue of Language or of Culture? Language Teaching in AFL Programs: Translation and Cultural Aspects

Summary/Abstract: This article presents a series of reflections on the practice of teaching Italian as a business language in LEA (French acronym for Applied Foreign Languages – Langues Étrangères Appliquées). The general tendency among non-Italian learners of Italian language points to the fact that the perception of this language, once considered as the best repertory of artistic, musical or gastronomical terms, is slowly changing and that Italian is acquiring importance as a business language. As a result, teachers are faced with new challenges and have to deliver on new learning strategies; among these, translation as a vehicle for cultural significance, indeed a way of discovering and exploring cultural differences, seems to be very fruitful according to some case studies drawing on our teaching experience.
