Summary/Abstract: In the current context, many phenomena brought about by globalization affect the balance of the security policy of the European space and even of the global scene: economic and monetary crisis, regional conflicts, religious fanaticism, terrorism, organized crime etc. After a brief overview of developments in EU policy on security and defence, the author of this article presents new threats to European security, the current configuration of the relations between the EU, NATO, USA, the Russian Federation and China, possible options and responsibilities of both international organizations and states, in order to maintain international balance.
