Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the motif of childhood on the basis of selected small narrative forms by Józef Ignacy Kraszewski. The interpretative material consists of the following works: the academic reminiscence Adam (1843) from the Volhynia period and Councilman Maciek (1884) and Psiarek (1888), two stories written in exile. The writer presented the course of early socialization along with the psychosocial consequences of the process, felt at further stages of life. The issue of developing and satisfying a child's cognitive aspirations became his particular subject of interest, while learning was shown from the axiological (as a value in itself), institutional (in the context of school education) and social (the road to promotion) perspectives.
