Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to show how Roman Zmorski, who represents a model of interest in folk culture, based on visiting villages and writing down folk tales typical of the first half of the nineteenth century in Poland, portrayed elements of folk imagination in his Podania i baśni ludu [Folk Legends and Fairy Tales]. Assuming that folklorists and writers of this period had limited knowledge of folk magical thinking, the article tries to find meanings that Zmorski – knowingly or not – recounted in his works. The analysis focuses on selected stories from Podania i baśni ludu; firstly, the article describes the imagery of time and space that appears in Zmorski’s stories; secondly, it discusses the meaning of demons, devils and witches.
