Summary/Abstract: The glazed pottery found in the excavations of the medieval settlement at Zimnicea is part of the Byzantine pottery tradition. Its origin is uncertain and has had to be sought mainly in the northern Bulgaria workshops. The classification criteria used for the glazed ceramics (which includes commercial, morphological, stylistic and ethnographic criteria) has allowed the establishment of typologies and the systematization of the classifications. The following are in use: ‘common vessels’, ‘household use pieces’ and ‘objects for the decoration of walls’; the sizes and ratios between them (which determines the shape of the vessel): and ‘wide or open shapes’, ‘high or closed shapes’ or ‘special shapes’. In addition, the following decoration techniques and the pattern or pattern combinations are used: ‘sgraffito pottery’ (found in the largest quantity and range type); ‘champlevé pottery’; ‘painted pottery’; and ‘monochrome pottery’.
