Summary/Abstract: This paper argues that critical literacy, a pedagogy of democracy that teaches individual empowerment and embraces social justice, can be taught to students through the genre of fantasy literature which is itself uniquely suited to address the tenets of critical literacy. Through brief explorations of two popular fantasy texts, this paper illustrates the depth and complexity of these works and ways each text can be used to teach critical literacy skills, thus demonstrating that these works in particular—and fantasy literature in general— can be used to empower students and promote social justice through critical literacy pedagogy.
