Structural and semantic determinants of the adjectival valency (as exemplified by Polish material)

Summary/Abstract: The main objective of this article is to indicate formal or semantic features that cause adjectives to be at least bivalent structures, i.e. structures that, apart from positions denoting the bearer of a given property, include other arguments. It turns out that the vast majority of the valent adjectives inherit their arguments from the verbs that motivate them synchronically or diachronically in terms of inflection or word formation. The author also discusses other determinants of the adjectival valency, i.e. factors related to the need to differentiate meanings.
