Summary/Abstract: The notion of human rights diplomacy is a recent one, influenced by the experience of the U.S. President, Jimmy Carter, and by Francois Mitterrand’s activity as President in France. Despite its ambiguities and contradictions, it might be said that it is influenced by classical diplomatic activity, because the promotion of human rights is one of the main goals of diplomacy.
