Summary/Abstract: Among the many events that occurred during the past academic year, it is especially worth noting Cardinal Franciszek Macharski’s passing away on August 2, 2016, at the age of 89. Cardinal Macharski was our university’s first Great Chancellor starting in 1981, when Pope St. John Paul II established it as the Pontifical Academy of Theology. Our community was greatly saddened to learn about this. However, this sadness was mixed with joy resulting from the conclusion of World Youth Day, the international meeting of Catholic youth. In his communiqué, His Excellency Rev. Prof. Dr. Hab. Wojciech Zyzak, Rector of our university, wrote: “The academic community of the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow learned of the passing of Cardinal Franciszek Macharski ‒ Archbishop of Krakow in 1979-2005, Great Chancellor of our university, pastor, and continuer of the legacy of Cardinal Karol Wojtyła ‒ with great sadness […] In 1981, when the Pontifical Academy of Theology [presently the pontifical University of John Paul II] was founded, he became the Great Chancellor of our university. He holds an honorary doctorate from the Pontifical Academy of Theology, the Jagiellonian University, and the Academy of Catholic Theology in Warsaw among others.”
