Summary/Abstract: The aim of the present article is the analysis of the so-called Documento de Santarém, which was promulgated in May 1972, after the historical debates of the bishops of the Brazilian Amazon. The hierarchs subjected to a profound revision the existing pastoral practice, in the sight of the Vatican II’s adjudications (1962-1965) and the Second General Conference of Latin American Bishops (Medelin 1968). While analysing the global and multi-faceted transformation taking place in the country, especially the Operação Amazonia, that is – a plan of the integral exploration for the benefit of the national progress, promoted by the junta (in control since 1964) – the Amazon bishops pointed to the key role of the theological concepts of the Incarnation and Liberation. Being guided by these criteria, the bishops subjected to the reinterpretation the place and the role of the Catholic Church in this isolated region of Brazil, which – suddenly – became the centre of interest and the purpose of the numerous socio-economic and military strategies.
