Summary/Abstract: The Historical development of the Rhodopes region presents an integral part of the common Ethnic and cultural development of the Bulgarian nationality and nation, despite the processes in the region pass in a specific way, reflected by historical, ethnic, confessional, geographical and other factors. Changes in the region are also bound to a considerably inconsecutive, contradictory and complicated process in the conscience of the rhodopeans, flowing variably among distinct ethnic and confessonal groups. In support of these conclusions in the study a survey is made of a long spanning ethno-cultural process, turned to the regeneration and consolidation of the region in the context of the development of the whole nation. This process which has taken place about the middle of XIX c. has distinct stages, structure and trends — a premise to deny the perception of the term "National Revival process" solely as change of the proper names of the Bulgarian Turks in 1985.
