Summary/Abstract: Social and political changes in Prussia in the middle of the 19th century made it possible to set up ecclesiastic associations. There were plans of founding an organisation which would reach beyond one diocese, with an intention to support Catholics living in diaspora in the areas of the Province of Posen and the Province of Prussia. In December 1851, the St. Adalbert Association was launched in Braniewo and its provisional constitution was accepted. It was headed by Fr. Joseph Carolus, Rector of the Seminary in Braniewo. Later it turned out that the association’s activity would only cover the area of the Warmia Diocese. The first general meeting of the organisation was held on 12 May 1852 in Frombork. At the meeting, the constitution was accepted and board members were elected. Fr. Andreas Herholz was appointed President, Fr. Anton Eichhorn became Vice-President, and Fr. Joseph Carolus, Fr. Anton Kaehs and Fr. Franz Thiedig were assistants. Local branches of the association were created in the whole area of the Warmia Diocese. Thanks to the collected funds, pastoral activity in the diaspora was supported, priests’ and teachers’ salaries were subsidised, construction projects were implemented and schools were founded. For the first nine years of the St. Adalbert Association’s activity, Catholic communities in Bartschkehmen, Bilderweitschen, Borawskie, Ełk, Klon, Kłajpeda, Kozia Góra, Kwidzyn, Lesiny Wielkie, Miłakowo, Młynary, Olecko, Pasłęk, Szibben, Szyłgały and Tylża received financial help.
