Summary/Abstract: Unde malum? is a question that has been asked for centuries, yet it has never been answered satisfactorily. A philosopher who is attempting at providing such an answer is accompanied by the sense of defeat. However, the matter is so weighty that nothing frees such a philosopher from undertaking attempts to solve the problem. Presenting two theses, this paper is a contribution in the pursuit of an answer to the analysed question. The first thesis concerns evil as the absence of being and moves the discussion into the field of metaphysics, which follows two directions of reflection on evil: one which denies it the status of being, and a contrary one, which assumes its objective existence. The second thesis reveals evil as a consequence of human freedom.
