Summary/Abstract: The author discusses the most important features of the cinematographic art of Witold Sobociński on the example of his most outstanding films from 1955-1999. An ear for music and the ability to improvise acquired from playing jazz are reflected in the form of rhythm and harmony, subtlety and dynamics present in the composition of the film image. A constant feature of Sobociński’s work is the significant role of colour and light in the film image. The cinematographer gives colour a dramatic function. He creates colour combinations for individual scenes, describing the outside world and the internal space of the character. In the choice of colours, he is inspired by the paintings of various eras. The artist wants to create an original artistic form in every work, he looks for a form of image appropriate to the content of the film being made. He does not repeat the solutions he used in his previous films. The chosen style is preserved throughout the work in accordance with the aesthetic assumptions.
