Summary/Abstract: The author analyses the biographical and statistical data available on the social origin, educational and professional background of the people she considers belonging to the governmental and parliamentary elite in the Balkan states in the 19th and early 20th century. She claims, two typological models of political elite’s routes to career can be outlined: gradual (or standard) one and the one of the “flying start”.
