Summary/Abstract: Professor G. Ivănescu, correspondent member of the Romanian Academy, was a prominent personality of Romanian linguistics. From 1962 to 1969, he acted as professor and head of department at the Faculty of Philology, West University of Timişoara. In this capacity, he contributed to the creation of the Timişoara School of Linguistics, which gathers scholars and professors of the Faculty, and linguists from the Timişoara branch of the “Titu Maiorescu” Institute of the Romanian Academy. In Timişoara, G. Ivănescu nurtured and inspired the first generation of linguists and scholars, whose research directions and scientific investigations he carefully supervised. In accordance with his guidelines, the linguists from Timişoara focused in particular on the issues concerning the investigation of the West-Romanian dialects and patois, on the history of the Romanian literary language, on stylistics, grammar, and Romance linguistics. Twelve of the linguists and philologists from Timişoara completed their PhD dissertations under the guidance of Professor G. Ivănescu. The Timişoara School of Linguistics, which bears the mark of the professor who founded it, occupies a distinct place in the landscape of Romanian linguistics.
