Summary/Abstract: The paper was inspired by a debate between entrepreneurs and social scientists on the problem of promotion of local SMEs. In this context, the aim of the paper is to demonstrate why such a promotion is not successful. Moreover, in the paper I attempt to form a critique of the ideologies that disregard SMEs (Darwinism, Marxism and neoliberalism) and to present two liberal ideologies alternative to neoliberalism: ordoliberalism and social liberalism, which may constitute a good starting point for bringing back the importance of SMEs into public life.
