The expression nic dziwnego against the background of other lexical exponents of the category of strangeness

Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on the Polish expression nic dziwnego [Eng. no wonder, literally: it is not strange/surprising], which can definitely be related to the concept of strangeness. The analyzed unit refers to strangeness on the surface (that is in the sphere of signifiant), yet it is not a representative member of this cognitive category. It is not used to predicate about strangeness, on the contrary – presenting nic dziwnego against the background of lexical exponents of the category of strangeness, one may consider this expression one of the negated variants of predicates which determine the analyzed property. Apart from the clause which is a simple negation of the expression to (jest) dziwne, że_ [it is strange that_] (that is nie jest dziwne (to), że_ [it is not strange that_]), the negated predicates include also nie dziw, że_ oraz i dziwić się, że_ [no wonder that_ as well as and you would wonder that_]. The analysis presented in the paper is to determine the meaning of the analyzed expression in order to try to formulate its definition. This main part of the text is preceded by an attempt to determine the grammatical status of the expression nic dziwnego.
