Summary/Abstract: This paper begins with the notion that music can directly refer to literature in the sense that a composer can take a completed, previously existing poetic text and "wrap it" in tones. In that case, instead of simply speaking of translation, we can talk about placing one form on another and about the interaction of the two forms and structures, literary and musical ones. (Пантини, 2006: 148). In that sense, the paper is presenting all of the Macedonian composers who were inspired by Koneski’s poetry. The main focus is on the attempt to provide an overview of the most significant music authors and works related to Koneski’s poetry. It starts with the classical music pieces of Tomislav Zografski, Ljubomir Brangjolica and others, through the popular music songs from the 70s by Dime Poposki, Slave Dimitrov, Zdenka Kovachichek and Zafir Hadjimanov to the latest works by the new generation of Macedonian music makers – Djoksi, Jakjoski, Foltin and Starowski. The paper is meant to initiate discussion on several open questions related to the musical treatments of Koneski’s lyrics, their rhythmical potential, the emotional power of his poetry and the interrelation with the cultural memory and identity.
