East European Migration Patterns -Romanian emigration-

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to highlight certain aspects that describe the characteristics of migration processes occurring in most East European states, by reference to the example of Romania. It is known that after the fall of "Iron Curtain" in 1990, a significant percentage of the population of Romania (figures vary between 2 and 5 million) chose to emigrate, mostly to Western European countries in search of a better lifestyle. It is therefore very important for both sociological and economic reasons, to conduct a meaningful analysis of this phenomenon, trying to find ways to control it. First, when discussing this topic, it is important to conduct a theoretical and methodological clarification on migration. The work will be based on the socio-economic study of national conditions and the influence they can have upon the decision to emigrate. Moreover, the main types of migration and types of migrant population in Romania will be presented in an attempt to identify specific aspects of migration from Romania to the European Union which can afterwards be applied to other countries facing similar problems.
