Atmosphere as a Phenomenon and Research Category

Summary/Abstract: In this article, I reflect over the philosophical category of atmosphere and its sociological application. I check what aspects of the definition of atmosphere or what conceptualisations of it “work” in social research into space, what assumptions motivate these usages, and what conclusions may be drawn from these configurations of meaning. I consider methodological practices and limitations in research into atmospheres. In particular, I ponder over the possibilities of the existence and diagnosis of spontaneous, unintended atmospheres, with no distinctly attributed authorship, mainly in relation to public spaces.
