Summary/Abstract: For more than 40 years, vitamin C has offered the hope of cancer treatment that is effective, cheap, and gentle for patients. In vitro studies and research using animal models of high doses of vitamin C for the treatment of cancer have promising results, but the conclusions of clinical trials are unclear. Mega-doses of vitamin C administrated intravenously do not produce positive results in the treatment of cancers; however, in combination with conventional therapies they can improve the quality of patients’ lives by reducing the undesirable side effects of chemotherapy. Yet, there are some contraindications and types of cancer for which ascorbic acid should not be given due to the risk of clinical deterioration. The article also discusses the latest findings that question the validity of vitamin C in the prevention of non-infectious diseases such as cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases and the common cold.
