A Sociological Approach to Total Institutions Contributions by Erving Goffman to the Penitentiary Institution's Review

Summary/Abstract: This study focuses on total institutions, addressing the subject from the observance of fundamental rights and the human condition. In order to draw a warning on the main issues of the organization and the being of a total institution, we present an example of psycho-sociological research results that sociologist Erving Goffman made five decades ago. News of these results is demonstrated by data obtained by the author using qualitative sociological methods and data from the studies of socialjudicial specialists. Thus it is made a brief presentation of the defining aspects of the prison, as the main total institution in Romania. Finally, the study proposes new theoretical-methodological approaches in the reform of the total institutions, starting from the need to respect fundamental rights, principles of rehabilitation and social reintegration.
