Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to discuss the most important aspects concerning the presence of the primeval waters in the Israelite and Jewish thought, with an emphasis on the first book of the Torah. The research took into account the similarities and differences between the creation narrative from Genesis and from the Mesopotamian poem “Enuma elish”. The main conclusion is that although the concept of primeval waters from the Israelite and Jewish religious thought is essentially similar to its Mesopotamian counterpart, the Biblical authors managed to transform and integrate it into the general framework of their strict monotheism.
