Summary/Abstract: Interaction of education and society are at the interest of education science from the very beginning of education perception. Already Confucius had some though about it. Importance of education was stressed during Enlightenment. The main contemporary education thinkers, like John Dewey, Theodor Brammeld, Alvin Toffler, Seymour Papert, etc. don’t avoid investigating of this interaction. Lithuanian Law on Education includes both roles of education – contextually relevant as well, as generative actor. Lithuanian education reform tradition is based on the idea, that education and culture are in very tight interaction, education is able generate progress of culture and society. Lithuanian scientists are searching for evidences of this influence or at least of elements of education progress, which is not so high in society at all. In this article theory of chaos and selforganization is used as explanation of societal progress. Principles of sustainable leadership are seen as applicable for usage in chaotic educational reforms processes. Examples from Lithuanian education reform are examining using principles of sustainable leadership as criteria for success. Some ideas for future reforms are proposed.
