Summary/Abstract: This article aims to give an overview of the modern renaissance of the French language and culture in the State of Louisiana. At one time, Louisiana as a former French territory had many native French speakers. Over time, French was discouraged as a first language and the number of native speakers began to decline. However, in recent years, the State of Louisiana has created programs to try to bring back the importance and prevalence of the French language and associated culture. These government-sponsored programs provide a unique paradigm through which to observe the revival of a language and related culture that otherwise have skipped several generations in most families.
