Summary/Abstract: Having existed for over a hundred and fifty years, „Familia” magazine continues to be a national reference point in what concerns the direction of literary critique, the establishment of an aesthetic canon, the affirmation of new talent, the consecration of the great Romanian writers, the importance given to the sciences, be they exact sciences or the humanities, proving that it fully deserves its “cultural magazine” title. In continuing the „Familia” tradition, the fifth series – the Andrițoiu period (1965-1989) grants a vast amount of space in its pages to belles-lettres. By receiving the aid of the great writers of the time, many of them with unpublished works, as well as by encouraging up-and-comers, Iosif Vulcan’s efforts to publish works that keep the readers’ interest at a high level have remained alive. We speak here of varied texts, from all literary genres, out of which the poetic genre is the most featured in the publication’s pages. A special openness towards universality becomes apparent from the increased interest in the literature from all across the world, as translations hold an important position here. Under the „Din lirica universală” formula, texts by great writers from different eras, along with representative poetry from different nations turn up in the pages of the magazine, whose translation belongs in the majority of cases to important personalities of the time. We can claim with certitude that „Familia” magazine defines itself along two fundamental lines: the direction of critique and the foregrounding of the essay. For this reason, we shall examine the literary essays, which rely on emotional impact, and the travelogue, which can be found under the „Note de drum” column.
