Summary/Abstract: This study aims to make a brief presentation of the history of translation from the earliest manifestations of interlinguistic transfer to the birth of the discipline called Translation Studies and the most recent trends in the study of translations. Although theoretical considerations regarding translation started to appear even in ancient times, the term translation studies came to be used only in the early 1970s. We present the most important cornerstones in the development of translations, alongside with the most remarkable contributors in the field of translations: practitioners and theoreticians alike.
