Summary/Abstract: This paper looks at Frank McCourt’s novel “Teacher Man” and tries to answer the question whether a poor Irish young man aged nineteen will make the American dream come true. The protagonist’s life is marked by ups and downs, by hope and disillusionment, by ecstasy and agony. When everything seems to have gone down the drains, it becomes obvious that Teacher Man has prevailed. He proves to be a ‘late bloomer’ - in his own words – both as a teacher and a novelist.
