Summary/Abstract: The present study deals with the cultural mixt in terms of affairs of honour of the students from Bucovina and Transylvania within the AustroHungarian Empire and the identity connotations of the Romanian-Hungarian duels. In the university centres of Chernivtsi, Vienna and partly in Cluj, the Romanian student associations adopted the organization, conduct and codes of honour of German students associations, the so-called Burschenschaft. Starting with the last two decades of the 19th century, in the process of shaping the national ethos in Bucovina and Transylvania, the affairs of honour played a role in the masculinization of self perceptions in community. In their desire of emancipating from foreign occupation, the Romanian young sought to become a class of gentlemen, nothing less of Austrian and Magyar elites. Firstly, they duelled for personal reasons, entering shyly the stage of conflicts of honour; then, they involved in disputes of honour driven by ethnic consciousness, seeking to make lost the ”effeminate” forms of contesting the foreign domination.
