Summary/Abstract: Among the multitude of problems faced by the University of Bucharest in the 1980s and triggered by the cuts in the number of student places, an important one was the skyrocketing competition in the admission exam for some of the University’s faculties. The present research aims to depict the social, political and demographic factors that influenced the spectacular rise in the competition for admission in some of the specializations and main fields of studies offered by the University of Bucharest, and attempts to conduct a quantitative reconstruction of the competition for admission in the University’s faculties, based on information available in the archives of the University.
