Summary/Abstract: Professor of the University of Chernivtsi, Raimund Friedrich Kaindl (1866-1930) was a leading figure of the Austrian historiography and ethnography of the late 19th century and the first decades of the following one. His historical work on Bukovina’s past, with its multitude of ethnicities, was the result of over four decades of scientific and cultural activity. Among other themes that he studied, he focused mainly on the history of the German population of Bukovina and the geographic area of the Carpathians. The outbreak of the First World War interrupted this fruitful activity, because the University of Chernivtsi and the professors took refuge at Vienna. As the chair of the Department of Austrian history at the University of Chernivtsi became vacant, at the proposal of the Minister of religious Affairs and Education, Emperor Franz Iosif appointed Professor Kaindl for this Department from October 1st, due to his specialization and scientific and didactic activity. Kaindl remained in Graz after the war was over, breaking the link with native Bukovina and its history.
