Summary/Abstract: The paper looks at the evolution of the historical novel from the romantic period to the contemporary age, observing the shift from the national to the international, from local colour to diversity, from a nostalgic view of the past to a touch of exoticism. The analysis of Barry Unsworth’s The Ruby in Her Navel is trying to identify both the traditional elements of the genre and contemporary tendencies displayed by it.
