Summary/Abstract: The present paper attempts to highlight the importance of the incongruity theory of humor throughout a history marked by cultural changes and also to point out some of its distinctive features as presented by Henri Bergson in his well-know study, Laughter: An Essay on the Meaning of the Comic. The function of the incongruity theory of humor will be analyzed in comparison with and in contrast to the superiority theory and relief theory, whose totalizing ambitions aimed at comprising the complex essence of humor within a single definition inevitably proved to be insufficient.
