Summary/Abstract: The paper aims to offer a synchronic presentation of the Polish case, which, with an exception of very few synthetic constructions, is in principle a two-element structure, consisting of two constituents – a preposition and an ending that it implies, e.g. w Gdańsk-u (‘in Gdańsk’). When we take non-prepositional languages as a basis for comparison, as e.g. Hungarian, the equivalent of a preposition here, most often of a primary one, and of an inflectional ending, is a synthetic case expressed solely by means of one agglutinative morpheme, e.g. Varsó-ban ‘in Warsaw’, Gdańsk-ban ‘in Gdańsk’.
